MargaretMitchell(1900-1949),borninAtlantain1900,MargaretMitchellgrewupsurroundedbyrelativeswhotoldendlesstalesoftheCivilWarandReconstruction.Sheknewthosewhowererelicsofade-stroyedculture,andthosewhohadputasidegentilityforsurvival.Hermotherinstilledinherthateducationwasheronlysecurity.SheattendedSmithCollegebuthadtocomehomewhenhermotherfellill.Afterhermother'sdeath,Margaretresolvedthatshehadtomakeahomeforherfatherandbrother,sosheleftcollegeandreturnedtoAtlanta.In1923,shebecameafeaturewriterfortheAtlantaJournal,andin1925,shemarriedJohnMarsh,apublicrelationsofficerforGeorgiaPower.Shefoundmostofherassignmentsunfulfilling,andshesoonlefttotrywritingfictionmoretoherowntaste.Herownharshestcritic,shewouldnottrytogetherworkpublished.ShebegantowriteGonewiththeWindin1926,whilerecoveringfromanautomobileaccident.Overthenexteightyearsshepainstakinglyresearchedforhistoricalaccuracy.Sheaccumulatedthousandsofpagesofmanuscript.Hereishowshelaterdescribedherlife'slabor:"WhenIlookbackontheselastyearsofstrugglingtofindtimetowritebetweendeathsinthefamily,illnessinthefamilyandamongfriendswhichlastedmonthsandevenyears,childbirths(notmyown),divorcesandneurosesamongfriends,myownillhealthandfourfineautoaccidents...itallseemslikeanightmare.Iwouldn'ttackleitagainforanything.JustassoonasIsatdowntowrite,somebodyIlovedwoulddecidetohavetheirgall-bladderremoved...."In1934,aneditorfromMacmillan'sPublisherscametoAtlantaseekingnewauthors.HewasreferredtoJohnandMargaretMarshaspeoplewhoknewAtlanta'sliteraryscene.Shesteeredhimtoseveralprospects,butdidn'tmentionherownwork.Afriendtoldhimthatshewaswritinganovel,butshedeniedit.OnthenightbeforehewastoleaveAtlanta,sheappearedathishotel-roomdoorwithherstillimperfect,mountainousmanuscriptandleftitwithhimforbetterorforworse.
