ItisovertwentyyearssinceJaredDiamondfocusedattentiononthepossibleexistenceofassemblyrulesforcommunities.Sincethentherehasbeenaproliferationofstudiestryingtopromote,refuteortesttheideathattherearesetsofconstraints(rules)oncommunityformationandmaintenance(assembly).Thistimelyvolumebringstogethercarefullyselectedcontributionswhichexaminethequestionoftheexistenceandnatureofassemblyruleswithsomerigourandinsomedetail,usingboththeoreticalandempiricalapproachesinavarietyofsystems.Theresultisabalancedtreatmentwhichencompassesawiderangeoftopicswithinecologyincludingcompetitionandcoexistence,conservationandbiodiversity,nichetheory,andbiogeography.Assuchitprovidesmuchtointerestabroadaudienceofecologists,whilealsomakinganimportantcontributiontothestudyofcommunityecologyinparticular.
