"IwasborninMelrose,Massachusetts,onNovember21,1908.IhavelivedallmylifeinNewEngland,andthoughIlovetotravelIcan'timagineevercallinganyotherplaceonearthhome.SinceIcan'trememberatimewhenIdidn'tintendtowrite,itishardtoexplainwhyItooksolonggettingaroundtoitinearnest.Buttheyearsseemedtogobyveryquickly.In1936ImarriedAldenSpeareandcametoConnecticut.NottillbothchildrenwereinjuniorhighdidIfindtimeatlasttositdownquietlywithapencilandpaper.Iturnednaturallytothethingswhichhadfilledmydaysandthoughtsandbegantowritemagazinearticlesaboutfamilyliving.ThenonedayIstumbledonatruestoryfromNewEnglandhistorywithacharacterwhoseemedtomeanidealheroine.ThoughIhadmyfirsthistoricalnovelalmostbyaccidentitsoonprovedtobeanabsorbinghobby."ElizabethGeorgeSpeare(1908-1994)wonthe1959NewberyMedalforTHEWITCHOFBLACKBIRDPOND,andthe1962NewberyMedalforTHEBRONZEBOW.ShealsoreceivedaNewberyHonorAwardin1983,andin1989shewaspresentedwiththeLauraIngallsWilderAwardforhersubstantialandenduringcontributiontochildren'sliterature.
