BernardMalamud,oneofAmerica'smostimportantnovelistsandshort-storywriters,wasborninBrooklynin1914.HetookhisB.A.degreeattheCityCollegeofNewYorkandhisM.A.atColombiaUniversity.From1940to1949hetaughtinvariousNewYorkschools,andthenjoinedthestaffofOregonStateUniversity,wherehestayeduntil1961.Thereafter,hetaughtatBenningtonStateCollege,Vermont.Hisremarkable,anduncharacteristicfirstnovel,TheNatural,appearedin1952.MalamudreceivedinternationalacclaimwiththepublicationofTheAssistant(1957,winneroftheRosenthalAwardandtheDaroffMemorialAward).HisotherworksincludeTheMagicBarrel(1958,winneroftheNationalBookAward),IdiotsFirst(1963,shortstories),TheFixer(1966,winnerofasecondNationalBookAwardandaPulitzerPrize),PicturesofFidelman(1969),TheTenants(1971),Rembrandt'sHat(1973,shortstories),Dubin'sLives(1979)andGod'sGrace(1982).BernardMalamudwasmadeamemberoftheNationalInstituteofArtsandLetters,USA,in1964,amemberoftheAmericanAcademyofArtsandSciencesin1967,andwonamajorItalianaward,thePremioMondello,in1985.BenardMalamuddiedin1986.
