Theterm‘postmodernity’hasbeenusedtodescribethathistoricaltransformationofthelate20thcenturywhentheinstitutionalbreaksholdingbackindividualemancipationdisintegrated,therebygivingrisetothefullexpressionofindividualdesiresandthequestforself-fulfilment.Buttherearenowsigns–arguesGillesLipovetsky,oneofthemostoriginalsocialthinkersinFrancetoday–thatwe’veenteredanewphaseof‘hypermodernity’,characterizedbyhyper-consumptionandthehypermodernindividual.Hyperconsumptionisaconsumptionwhichabsorbsandintegratesmoreandmorespheresofsociallifeandwhichencouragesindividualstoconsumefortheirownpersonalpleasureratherthantoenhancetheirsocialstatus.Hypermodernityisasocietycharacterizedbymovement,fluidityandflexibility,distancedmorethaneverfromthegreatstructuringprinciplesofmodernity.Andthehypermodernindividual,whileorientedtowardspleasureandhedonism,isalsofilledwiththekindoftensionandanxietythatcomesfromlivinginaworldwhichhasbeenstrippedoftraditionandwhichfacesanuncertainfuture.Individualsaregnawedbyanxiety;fearhassuperimposeditselfontheirpleasures,andanguishontheirliberation.Everythingworriesandalarmsthem,andtherearenolongeranybeliefssystemstowhichtheycanturnforassurance.Thesearehypermoderntimes.
