DonaldCrewsistherenownedcreatoroftwoCaldecottHonorbooks,FreightTrainandTruck.AmonghisotherenormouslypopularbooksaresuchfavoritesasNightattheFair,SailAway,Bigmama's,Shortcut,andSchoolBus.Heandhiswife,AnnJonas,liveinNewYork'sHudsonRiverValley.DonaldCrewsgrewupinNewark,NewJersey,andsaysthatallthroughhischildhoodthemembersofhisfamilywerealwaysdoingsomethingwiththeirhands.Hewasalwaysdrawingpictures.Now,intheoldfarmhousewhereheliveswithhiswife,thenotedauthorandillustratorAnnJonas,DonaldCrewsisstilldrawingpictures.AftergraduatingfromNewYorkCity'sCooperUnion,Mr.Crewsspentthreeyearsworkingasadesigner.HewasassistantartdirectorofDancemagazine,onthestaffofasmalldesignstudio,anddidfreelanceworkasabook-jacketdesigner.Butin1962hewasinductedintotheArmy,andforatimehisartisticpursuitsweresetaside.Astheendofhiseighteen-monthmilitarystintinGermanyapproached,heassignedhimselftothetaskofwritingandillustratingachildren'sbooktoaddtohisportfolio.TheresultwasthebrilliantconceptbookWeRead:AtoZ(Harper&Row,1967),which,nearlytwentyyearslater,wasreissuedbyGreenwillowBooks.TenBlackDots,acountingbook,camenext,andthenseveralbooksforwhichhedidillustrationsonly.Buttheturningpointcamein1978,whenGreenwillowpublishedFreightTrain,apicturebookinspiredbyMr.Crews'schildhoodtraintripsfromNewarktovisithisgrandmotherinFlorida.ItwasnamedaCaldecottHonorBook.Sincethen,Mr.Crewshascreatedseveralotherhighlyacclaimedpicturebooks(includingTruck,a1981CalclecottHonorBook),allpaintedintheflat,cleancolorsandbright,unambiguousshapesthatarethehallmarksofhisstrikinggraphics.DonaldCrewsgrewupinNewark,NewJersey,spenthissummersinCottondale,Florida,andwasgraduatedfromCooperUnioninNewYorkCity.Heandhiswife,AnnJonas,liveinBrooklyn,NewYork.WhenDonaldCrewsisaskedwhyhefocusesonpicturebooks,hefrequentlyanswers,"Whynot?"Allthetoolsnecessaryforthecreationofanypieceofartarealsoelementsinasuccessfulpicturebook.Mr.Crewschoosesasubject,exploreswaystodevelopthesubjectvisually,writesastory,thenproduceshisfinishedillustrations.Andthefinalaudience,thechildren,tellhimthattheylikewhathedoes.Whynot,indeed!DonaldCrewsgrewupinNewark,NewJersey,spenthissummersinCottondale,Florida,andwasgraduatedfromCooperUnioninNewYorkCity.
