Dr.RonaldL.(Ron)RardinretiredasDistinguishedProfessorEmeritusin2013aftera40-yearrecordofleadershipasaneducatorandresearcherinoptimizationmethodsandtheirapplicationculminatingafter2007asJohnandMaryLibWhiteDistinguishedProfessorofIndustrialEngineeringonthefacultyoftheUniversityofArkansas-Fayetteville.HeheadedtheUniversity’sCenteronInnovationinHealthcareLogistics(CIHL)targetingsupplychainandmaterialflowaspectsofhealthcareoperationsincollaborationwithavarietyofhealthcareindustryorganizations.HealsotooktheleadwithcolleaguesatArkansasinfoundingtheHealthSystemsEngineeringAlliance(HSEA)ofindustrialengineeringacademicprogramsinterestedinhealthcare.Earlier,ProfessorRardinretiredin2006asProfessorEmeritusofIndustrialEngineeringatPurdueUniversityaftercompleting24yearsthere,includingdirectingthePurdueEnergyModelingResearchGroups,andplayingaleadingroleinPurdue’sRegenstriefCenterforHealthcareEngineering.PreviouslyhehadservedontheIndustrialandSystemsEngineeringfacultyattheGeorgiaInstituteofTechnologyfor9years.Healsoservedtheprofessioninarotationfrom2000–2003asProgramDirectorforOperationsResearchandServiceEnterpriseEngineeringattheNationalScienceFoundation,includingfoundingthelatterprogramtofosterresearchinserviceindustries.Dr.RardinobtainedhisB.A.andM.P.A.degreesfromtheUniversityofKansas,andafterworkingincitygovernment,consultinganddistributionforfiveyears,aPh.D.atGeorgiaInstituteofTechnology.Histeachingandresearchinterestscenteronlarge-scaleoptimizationmodelingandalgorithms,especiallytheirapplicationinhealthcareandenergy.Heisanawardwinningteacherofthosetopics,andco-authorofnumerousresearchpapersandtwocomprehensivetextbooks:agraduatetextDiscreteOptimization,publishedin1988,andacomprehensiveundergraduatetextbookonmathematicalprogramming,OptimizationinOperationsResearch,whichwaspublishedin1998andreceivedtheInstituteofIndustrialEngineers(IIE)BookoftheYearaward.Amonghismanyotherhonors,heisaFellowofbothIIEandtheInstituteforOperationsResearchandtheManagementSciences(INFORMS),aswellas2012winneroftheIIE’sDavidF.Bakerawardforcareerresearchachievement.
