AkeymemberoftheLightandSpacemovementinLosAngelesduringthe1960sand1970s,DeWainValentineisdistinguishedinparticularbyhisin-depthunderstandingofsyntheticmaterialsandhisabilitytotransformindustrialproductsintoartworksthatinvestigatetheseductivepoweroflight,transparency,reflection,andsurface.Publishedinconjunctionwithhiscriticallylauded2015exhibitionatDavidZwirner,NewYork,DeWainValentine:Worksfromthe1960sand1970sfocusesontheartist’spioneeringachievementsinpolyesterresin.AnewscholarlytextbyRobinClarkonValentine’sproductionfromthisperioddetailshispersonalhistoryandhisinnovationswiththismaterial.InfluencedbythevastCalifornialandscape,hewasinitiallyconfrontedwithmateriallimitations:atthetime,polyesterresinscouldnotbepouredinvolumesexceedingfiftypounds.Notwillingtoacceptthisrestriction,ValentinepartneredwithHastingsPlasticsin1966tocreateanentirelynewresinthatcouldbecastinlargerquantities.Theresultingmaterial,knownasValentineMasKastResin,allowedtheartisttodramaticallyincreasethescaleofhiswork.Withitsinherentabilitytocontainandreflectlight,whilemaintainingapowerfulluminousdimension,polyesterresinwouldformthefoundationofValentine’spractice.ThecatalogueincludesrichcolorplatesofValentine’s“Columns,”corporeallyscaledsculpturescastincoloredpolyesterresinsthatrecedefromawiderbaseuptoanarrowtip;his“Circles,”6-footdiscsthatdisplaynotonlytheartist’smasteryofgeometricalform,butalsohighlighthiscommandofcolorinsculpture;andaselectionoftheartist’ssmallerforms―rings,discs,anddoublepyramids.ThecataloguealsofeaturesextensivedocumentationofDoubleColumnGray(1975–1976),twomassive,identicalcolumnsthateachstandtwelvefeettall.OriginallyexecutedforBaxterTravenolLaboratories’inDeerfield,Illinois,Valentinehadconceivedoftwoimmenseverticalcolumnsstandingsidebyside,butbecauseofarchitecturallimitations,Valentinewasforcedtoinstallthetwoslabsontheirsides.Fortyyearsafteritsinitialconception,theexhibitionatDavidZwirnerrepresentedthefirsttimethisworkwaspresentedinitsintendedconfiguration.
