LawrenceFerlinghettiwasborninYonkers,NewYork,in1919.AfterreceivinganA.B.degreeinjournalismfromtheUniversityofNorthCarolina,anM.A.fromColumbiaUniversity,andastintintheNavyduringWorldWarII,andafterworkinginthemailroomatTimeMagazineandlivinginPariswherehereceivedaDoctoratdel'UniversitefromtheSorbonne,FerlinghettieventuallysettledinSanFrancisco,whereheandPeterD.Martinfoundedthefirstall-paperbackbookstoreinthecountry,CityLightsBooks.BesidesbeingnamedSanFrancisco'sfirstpoetlaureate,hehasreceivedTheBeforeColumbusFoundation"LifetimeAchievementAward."Mostrecentlyhehasalsobeenwritingaweeklycolumn,“PoetryasNews,”fortheSanFranciscoChronicleBookReview.
