RalphWaldoEmerson,thesonofaUnitarianministerandachaplainduringtheAmericanRevolution,wasbornin1803inBoston.HeattendedtheBostonLatinSchool,andin1817enteredHarvard,graduatingin1820.Emersonsupportedhimselfasaschoolteacherfrom1821-26.In1826hewas"approbatedtopreach,"andin1829becamepastoroftheScondChurch(Unitarian)inBoston.ThatsameyearhemarriedEllenLouiseTucker,whowastodieoftuberculosisonlyseventeenmonthslater.In1832EmersonresignedhispastorateandtraveledtoEurpe,wherehemetColeridge,Wordsworth,andCarlyle.HesettledinConcord,Massachusetts,in1834,wherehebegananewcareerasapubliclecturer,andmarriedLydiaJacksonayearlater.AgroupthatgatheredaroundEmersoninConcordcametobeknownas"theConcordschool,"andincludedBronsonAlcott,HenryDavidThoreau,NathanielHawthorne,andMargaretFuller.EveryyearEmersonmadealecturetour;andtheselectureswerethesourceofmostofhisessays.Nature(1836),hisfirstpublishedwork,containedtheessenceofhistranscendentalphilosophy,whichviewstheworldofphenomenaasasortofsymboloftheinnerlifeandemphasizesindividualfreedomandself-reliance.Emerson'saddresstothePhiBetaKappasocietyofHarvard(1837)andanotheraddresstothegraduatingclassoftheHarvardDivinitySchool(1838)appliedhisdoctrinetothescholarandtheclergyman,provokingsharpcontroversy.Anardentabolitionist,Emersonlecturedandwrotewidelyagainstslaveryfromthe1840'sthroughtheCivilWar.HisprincipalpublicationsincludetwovolumesofEssays(1841,1844),Poems(1847),RepresentativeMen(1850),TheConductofLife(1860),andSocietyandSolitude(1870).Hediedofpneumoniain1882andwasburiedinConcord.
