GUSTAVEFLAUBERTwasborninRouenin1821,thesonofaprominentphysician.Asolitarychild,hewasattractedtoliteratureatanearlyage,andafterhisrecoveryfromanervousbreakdownsufferedwhilealawstudent,heturnedhistotalenergiestowriting.AsidefromjourneystotheNearEast,Greece,Italy,andNorthAfrica,andastormyliaisonwiththepoetessLouiseColet,hislifewasdedicatedtothepracticeofhisart.Theformofhisworkwasmarkedbyintenseaestheticscrupulousnessandpassionatepursuitoflemotjuste;itscontentalternatelyreflectedscornforFrenchbourgeoissocietyandaromantictasteforexotichistoricalsubjectmatter.ThesuccessofMadameBovary(1857)wasensuredbygovernmentprosecutionfor“immorality”;Salammbô(1862)andTheSentimentalEducation(1869)receivedacoolpublicreception;notuntilthepublicationofThreeTales(1877)washisgeniuspopularlyacknowledged.Amongfellowwriters,however,hisreputationwassupreme.HiscircleoffriendsincludedTurgenevandtheGoncourtbrothers,whiletheyoungGuydeMaupassantunderwentanarduousliteraryapprenticeshipunderhisdirection.Increasingpersonalisolationandfinancialinsecuritytroubledhislastyears.HisfinalbitternessanddisillusionwerevividlyevidencedinthesavagelysatiricBouvardandPécuchet,leftunfinishedathisdeathin1880.
