TheMessagePassingInterface(MPI)specificationiswidelyusedforsolvingsignificantscientificandengineeringproblemsonparallelcomputers.ThereexistmorethanadozenimplementationsoncomputerplatformsrangingfromIBMSP-2supercomputerstoclustersofPCsrunningWindowsNTorLinux("Beowulf"machines).TheinitialMPIStandarddocument,MPI-1,wasrecentlyupdatedbytheMPIForum.Thenewversion,MPI-2,containsbothsignificantenhancementstotheexistingMPIcoreandnewfeatures.UsingMPIisacompletelyup-to-dateversionoftheauthors'1994introductiontothecorefunctionsofMPI.ItaddsmaterialonthenewC++andFortran90bindingsforMPIthroughoutthebook.Itcontainsgreaterdiscussionofdatatypeextents,themostfrequentlymisunderstoodfeatureofMPI-1,aswellasmaterialonthenewextensionstobasicMPIfunctionalityaddedbytheMPI-2ForumintheareaofMPIdatatypesandcollectiveoperations.UsingMPI-2coversthenewextensionstobasicMPI.TheseincludeparallelI/O,remotememoryaccessoperations,anddynamicprocessmanagement.ThevolumealsoincludesmaterialontuningMPIapplicationsforhighperformanceonmodernMPIimplementations.
