LaurieLeewasborninStroud,Gloucestershire,in1914,andwaseducatedatSladvillageschoolandStroudCentralSchool.AttheageonnineteenhewalkedtoLondonandthentravelledonfootthroughSpain,asdescribedinhisbookAsIWalkedOutOneMidsummerMorning.In1950hemarriedCatherinePolgeandtheyhadonedaughter.CiderWithRosie(1959)hassoldoversixmillioncopiesworldwide,andwasfollowedbytwoothervolumesofautobiography:AsIWalkedOutOneMidsummerMorning(1969)andAMomentofWar(1991).LaurieLeealsopublishedfourcollectionsofpoems,TheSunMyMonument(1944),TheBloomofCandles(1947),MyMany-CoatedMan(1955)andPacketPoems(1960)aswellasTheVoyageofMagellan(1948),averseplayforradio,ARoseforWinter(1955),whichrecordshistravelsinAndalusia,TheFirstborn(1964),ICan'tStayLong(1975),acollectionofhiswriting,andTwoWomen(1983).LaurieLeediedinMay1997.InitsobituarytheGuardianwrote,'Hehasanightingaleinsidehim,acapacityforsensuous,lyricalprecisions'.
