OsamuTezuka(1928-89)isthegodfatherofJapanesemangacomics.Heoriginallyintendedtobecomeadoctorandearnedhisdegreebeforeturningtowhatwasthenamediumforchildren.HismanyearlymasterpiecesincludetheseriesknownintheU.S.asAstroBoy.Withhissweepingvision,deftlyinterwinedplots,feelfortheworkingsofpower,andindefatigablecommitmenttohumandignity,Tezukaelevatedmangatoanartform.ThelaterTezuka,whenheauthoredBuddha,oftenhadinmindthematurereadershipthatmangagainedinthesixtiesandthathadonlygrowneversince.TheKurosawaofJapanesepopculture,OsamuTezukaisatwentiethcenturyclassic.
