Georges-LouisLeclerc,countofBuffon(1707-1788),treasureroftheAcademyofSciences,memberofFrenchAcademy,theRoyalSocietyofLondon,theEdinburghAcademy,theSaintPetersburgAcademyandtheInstituteofBologna,wasnamed,in1739,GovernoroftheJardinduRoiinParisandwasresponsibleforrestructuringthisinstituteandfoundingtheNationalMuseumofNaturalHistoryinParis.HewasmostfamousforhismasterpieceHistoireNaturelle,GeneraleetParticuliere,inwhichheshowsthesimilaritiesbetweenmanandmonkey,andthepossibilityofcommongenealogy.
