ProfessorGottsteinistheHeadoftheInstituteofPhysicalMetallurgyandMetalPhysicsoftheRhineland-WestphalianTechnicalUniversityofAachen,Germany.HavingobtainedhisacademicdegreesfromRWTH,heworkedforaltogethernineyearsintheUSA,asaVisitingScientistintheArgonneNationalLaboratory,AssociateProfessorandthenasaProfessoratMichiganStateUniversity.In1989hetookuphispresentappointmentatRWTH.ProfessorGottsteinhasauthoredtentextbooks,morethan450articlesand42invitedpapersforinternationalconferences.Hehasreceivednumerousscientificawards,includingtheMaxPlanckResearchAwardoftheAlexandervonHumboldtFoundation,theMasingAwardoftheGermanMetallurgicalSocietyandtheHeynMedaloftheGermanMaterialsSociety.SinceJanuary2004heisaneditorofthescientificjournalActaMaterialia.
