ErikaWeihs(neeFischl)wasbornNovember4,1917inVienna,Austria.SheattendedGraphischeLehrundVersuchsanstaltinVienna,from1934to1937.AftertheNazitakeoverofAustriain1938,shemovedtoEngland,fromwhencesheemigratedtotheUnitedStatesin1940.AsidefromafewyearsinCanada,WeihshaslivedintheU.S.since1940,mostlyinNewYorkCity.In1942,shemarriedKurtWeihs,anartistandillustrator,withwhomshe'shadtwochildren.Since1942,Weihshasbeenafree-lancepainterandillustrator,withnumerousone-womanandgroupexhibitionsinNewYorkandthesurroundingarea.Sheprimarilyillustratesbookswrittenbyotherauthors.Frequently,thesebooksdealwithJewishreligionandculture.Shedescribesherstyleas"flat,twodimensional,"andclaimsthatherinfluencesincludeKatheKollwitz,BenShahnandEgyptianArt.LilaPerlYerkowwasborninBrooklyn,NewYork,andhadaveryordinaryanduneventful(asitseemedtoher)childhood.Shereadvoraciously,butitneveroccurredtoherthatshewouldonedaybecomeawriter.Shedidn'tbegintopublishjuvenilefictionandnonfictionuntilherownchildrenwereinthefourthorfifthgradesatschool.Shewasstimulatedbytheirexpandinginterestsandbytherealizationthatshehadagreatneedtoexplorethelong-silentworldofherownchildhood.
