Personalitydisordershavebeenrecognizedascategoriesofpsychiatricillness,andstillneedtobebetterdefined.Thisbookinterpretsthepersonalitydisordersasproductsoftheinteractionbetweensocialinfluencesandotheraetiologicalfactorsaspartofabroadbiopsychosocialmodel,andexplainshowpersonalitytraitsdevelopintopersonalitydisorders.Stronglyorientedtowardsrecentempiricalfindings,theauthorarguesthatalthoughbiological,psychologicalandsocialfactorsareallnecessary,noneofthemisbyitselfsufficienttoproduceapersonalitydisorder.Thisbasicmodelisalsoamodeloftreatment,inwhichbiological,experientialandsocialfactorsshouldallbeaddressedintherapyandhistreatmentrecommendationsfocusparticularlyonsocialadjustmentthroughtheadaptiveuseofpersonalitytraits.
