LittleisknownofthelifeofEuripides.Hewasbornabout485B.C.ontheislandofSalamisandmayhavebegunacareerasapainterbeforewritinginthedramacompetitionsin455B.C.Duringhislifetimehisplayswereoftenproduced,buthewontheAtheniandramaprizeonlyfourtimes.Hediedin406B.C.Euripideswasaprolificwriter,theauthorofsomeeighty-eightormoreplays,ofwhichnineteenhavesurvivedunderhisname.Hewascriticizedbytheconservativesofhistimeforintroducingshabbyheroesandimmoralwomenintohisplays,apracticethattheyconsidereddegradingtothenobleformoftragedy.However,audiencestowhomhispredecessorswerecoldandremotefoundEuripidesdirectandappealing.Euripidesbecameimmenselypopularafterhediedandhisinfluencealtereddramaforever.ConsideredbyGeorgeBernardShawtobethegreatestoftheGreekdramatists,Euripidesisnowregardedbymanyastheoriginatorofthedramaticsensibilitythatdevelopedintowhatwecall"modern"Europeandrama.
