LarryNivenwasbornin1938inLosAngeles,California.In1956,heenteredtheCaliforniaInstituteofTechnology,onlytoflunkoutayearandahalflaterafterdiscoveringabookstorejammedwithusedscience-fictionmagazines.HegraduatedwithaB.A.inmathematics(minorinpsychology)fromWashburnUniversity,Kansas,in1962,andcompletedoneyearofgraduateworkbeforehedroppedouttowrite.Hisfirstpublishedstory,TheColdestPlace,appearedintheDecember1964issueofWorldsofIf.HewontheHugoAwardforBestShortStoryin1966forNeutronStarandin1974forTheHoleMan.The1975HugoAwardforBestNovelettewasgiventoTheBorderlandofSol.HisnovelRingworldwonthe1970HugoAwardforBestNovel,the1970NebulaAwardforBestNovel,andthe1972Ditmar,anAustralianawardforBestInternationalScienceFiction.
