Agreattriumphoftwentieth-centuryphysics，thetheoryofquantummechanics，isnownearly40yearsold，yetwehavegenerallybeengivingourstudentstheirintroductorycourseinphysics(formanystudents，theirlast)withhardlymorethanacasualallusiontothiscentralpartofourknowledgeofthephysicalworld.Weshoulddobetterbythem.Theselecturesareanattempttopresentthemwiththebasicandessentialideasofthequantummechanicsinawaythatwould，hopefully，becomprehensible.Theapproachyouwillfindhereisnovel，particularlyatthelevelofasophomorecourse，andwasconsideredverymuchanexperiment.Afterseeinghoweasilysomeofthestudentstaketoit，however，Ibelievethattheexperimentwasasuccess.Thereis，ofcourse，roomforimprovement，anditwillcomewithmoreexperienceintheclassroom.Whatyouwillfindhereisarecordofthatfirstexperiment..Inthetwo-yearsequenceoftheFeynmanLecturesonPhysicswhichweregivenfromSeptember1961throughMay1963fortheintroductoryphysicscourseatCaltech，theconceptsofquantumphysicswerebroughtinwhenevertheywerenecessaryforanunderstandingofthephenomenabeingdescribed.Inaddition，thelasttwelvelecturesofthesecondyearweregivenovertoamorecoherentintroductiontosomeoftheconceptsofquantummechanics.Itbecameclearasthelecturesdrewtoaclose，however，thatnotenoughtimehadbeenleftforthequantummechanics.Asthematerialwasprepared，itwascontinuallydiscoveredthatotherimportantandinterestingtopicscouldbetreatedwiththeelementarytoolsthathadbeendeveloped.TherewasalsoafearthatthetoobrieftreatmentoftheSchrodingerwavefunctionwhichhadbeenincludedinthetwelfthlecturewouldnotprovideasufficientbridgetothemoreconventionaltreatmentsofmanybooksthestudentsmighthopetoread.Itwasthereforedecidedtoextendtheserieswithsevenadditionallectures;theyweregiventothesophomoreclassinMayof1964.Theselecturesroundedoutandextendedsomewhatthematerialdevelopedintheearlierlectures.
