Saidwasaninfluentialculturalcriticandauthor,knownbestforhisbookOrientalism(1978),whichcatapultedhimtointernationalacademicfame.ThebookpresentedhisinfluentialideasonOrientalism,theWesternstudyofEasterncultures.SaidcontendedthatOrientalistscholarshipwasandcontinuestobeinextricablytiedtotheimperialistsocietiesthatproducedit,makingmuchoftheworkinherentlypoliticized,serviletopower,andthereforesuspect.GroundingmuchofthisthesisinhisintimateknowledgeofcolonialliteraturesuchasthefictionofConrad,andinthepost-structuralisttheoryofFoucault,Derridaandothers,Said'sOrientalismandfollowingworksprovedinfluentialinliterarytheoryandcriticism,andcontinuetoinfluenceseveralotherfieldsinthehumanities.OrientalismaffectedMiddleEasternstudiesinparticular,transformingthewaypractitionersofthedisciplinedescribeandexaminetheMiddleEast.SaidcametodiscussandvigorouslydebatetheissueofOrientalismwithscholarsinthefieldsofhistoryandareastudies,manyofwhomdisagreedwithhisthesis,includingmostfamouslyBernardLewis.
