Pierre-JosephRedouté(10July1759inSaint-Hubert,Belgium–19June1840inParis),wasaBelgianpainterandbotanist,knownforhiswatercoloursofroses,liliesandotherflowersatMalmaison.Hewasnicknamed"TheRaphaelofflowers".HewasanofficialcourtartistofQueenMarieAntoinette,andhecontinuedpaintingthroughtheFrenchRevolutionandReignofTerror.Redoutésurvivedtheturbulentpoliticalupheavaltogaininternationalrecognitionforhispreciserenderingsofplants,whichremainasfreshintheearly21stcenturyaswhenfirstpainted.JamesSowerby(21March1757–25October1822)wasanEnglishnaturalistandillustrator.Contributionstopublishedworks,suchasASpecimenoftheBotanyofNewHollandorEnglishBotany,includehisdetailedandappealingplates.Theuseofvividcolourandaccessibletextswereintendedtoreachawideningaudienceinworksofnaturalhistory.
