WilliamSomersetMaughamwasbornin1874andlivedinParisuntilhewasten.HewaseducatedatKing'sSchool,Canterbury,andatHeidelbergUniversity.HespentsometimeatSt.Thomas'Hospitalwiththeideaofpractisingmedicine,butthesuccessofhisfirstnovel,LizaofLambeth,publishedin1897,wonhimovertoliterature.OfHumanBondage,thefirstofhismasterpieces,cameoutin1915,andwiththepublicationin1919ofTheMoonandSixpencehisreputationasanovelistwasestablished.Atthesametimehisfameasasuccessfulplaywrightandwriterwasbeingconsolidatedwithacclaimedproductionsofvariousplaysandthepublicationofseveralshortstorycollections.Hisotherworksincludetravelbooks,essays,criticismandtheautobiographicalTheSummingUpandAWriter'sNotebook.In1927SomersetMaughamsettledintheSouthofFranceandlivedthereuntilhisdeathin1965
