AdamSmithwasborninScotland,in1723,andreceivedhisearlyeducationatthelocalburghschool.HesubsequentlyattendedGlasgowUniversity(1737-1740),andBalliolCollege,Oxford(1740-1746).TwoyearsafterhisreturntoScotland,SmithmovedtoEdinburgh,wherehedeliveredlecturesonRhetoric.In1751SmithwasappointedProfessorofLogicatGlasgow,butwastranslatedtochairofMoralPhilosophyin1752.TheTheoryofMoralSentimentswaspublishedin1759,andTheWealthofNationsin1776,thesameyearastheDeclarationofIndependence.AmartyaSenisaNobelPrize-winningeconomist,knownforhisworkonthewayeconomicsaffectsthewell-beingofhumans.FormerlytheMasterofTrinityCollege,Cambridge,SenisnowLamontUniversityProfessoratHarvardUniversity,anddivideshistimebetweenCambridge,Massachusetts,andCambridge,England.HisbooksincludeDevelopmentasFreedom,IdentityandViolence,andTheIdeaofJustice.RyanPatrickHanleyistheauthorofAdamSmithandtheCharacterofVirtue.AnassistantprofessorofpoliticalscienceatMarquetteUniversity,hehasbeentherecipientoffellowshipsfromtheMellonFoundationandtheNationalEndowmentfortheHumanities.
