Atthetimeofwriting,Ifreelyconfess,IknowlittlemoreaboutShanghaithantheseimages.Theycameuponme,asitwere,inthenight,unexpectedly.Iknow,andknewinstantly,thatIwillneverforgetFromtheforewordbyWilliamGibsonThesearephotographsoftheShanghaithatwillnotsurvivethevisionthecityasforitself.Thatthesehomes,shops,lanesandbuildingssurvivedaslongastheydid,andinthewaythattheydid,isbyaccidentratherthandesign.Whatevertheutilityofthispartialandverysubjectiverecord,myintentions,asmuchasIunderstandthem,havelittletodowitharchitectureorpreservation.Imnotanhistorianoranarchitecturalphotographer.ButIdowantotmakephotographsthatshowwhataplace,thisplace,lookslikewhenitsusedinthisway.HereisShanghaislived-in-ness,thevanishingevidenceofthehardflowoftimethroughthiscityGregGirardAsShanghaimodernizes,buildingsandneighbourhoodsthatwereoncepreservedbyaccidentarenowbeingpurposefullydemolished.Since1998,GregGirardhasbeenphotographingtheeffectthistransformationhashadonbuildings,shops,homes,neighbourhoodsandinhabitantsofChinaslargestcity.PhantomShanghaiistheresult:aspectacularphotographicjourneythroughtheShanghaithatisunlikelytosurviveitsvisionofurbandevelopment.

GregGirard(1955-)isaCanadianphotographer,livinginShanghaisince1998.HeiscapturingthetransformationsinChinaandacrossAsia.Largelyself-taught,hecombinesanthropologywithalyricalrealism.HiseditorialworkappearsinsuchpublicationsasTime,Newsweek,Fortune,TheNewYorkTimesMagazine,andmore.HeisrepresentedbytheMonteClarkGalleryinToronto.AnAmerican-bornCanadiansciencefictionwriter,he'sbeencalledthefatherofthecypberpunksubgenre.Hecoinedtheterm"cyberspace."HisNeuromancerhassoldmorethan6.5millioncopiessinceits1984release.Itwasthefirstnoveltowinallthreemajorsciencefictionawards:TheNebula,TheHugo,andthePhilipK.DickMemorialAward.
