HenryDavidThoreauwasborninConcord,Massachusettsin1817.HegraduatedfromHarvardin1837,thesameyearhebeganhislifelongJournal.InspiredbyRalphWaldoEmerson,ThoreaubecameakeymemberoftheTranscendentalistmovementthatincludedMargaretFullerandBronsonAlcott.TheTranscendentalists'faithinnaturewastestedbyThoreaubetween1845and1847whenhelivedfortwenty-sixmonthsinahomemadehutatWaldenPond.WhilelivingatWalden,Thoreauworkedonthetwobookspublishedduringhislifetime:Walden(1854)andAWeekontheConcordandMerrimackRivers(1849).Severalofhisotherworks,includingTheMaineWoods,CapeCod,andExcursions,werepublishedposthumously.ThoreaudiedinConcord,attheageofforty-four,in1862.
