EvelynWaughwasborninHampsteadin1903,secondsonofArthurWaugh,publisherandliterarycritic,andbrotherofAlecWaugh,thepopularnovelist.HewaseducatedatLancingandHertfordCollege,Oxford,wherehereadModernHistory.In1928hepublishedhisfirstwork,alifeofDanteGabrielRossetti,andhisfirstnovel,DeclineandFall,whichwassoonfollowedbyVileBodies(1930),BlackMischief(1932),AHandfulofDust(1934)andScoop(1938).DuringtheseyearshetravelledextensivelyinmostpartsofEurope,theNearEast,AfricaandtropicalAmerica,andpublishedanumberoftravelbooks,includingLabels(1930),RemotePeople,(1931),Ninety-TwoDays(1934)andWaughinAbyssinia(1936).In1939hewascommissionedintheRoyalMarinesandlatertransferredtotheRoyalHorseGuards,servingintheMiddleEastandinYugoslavia.In1942hepublishedPutOutMoreFlagsandthenin1945BridesheadRevisited.WhentheGoingwasGoodandTheLovedOneprecededMenatArms,whichcameoutin1952,thefirstvolumeof'TheSwordofHonour'trilogy,andwontheJamesTaitBlackMemorialPrize.Theothervolumes,OfficersandGentlemenandUnconditionalSurrender,followedin1955and1961.In1964hepublishedhislastbook,ALittleLearning,thefirstvolumeofanautobiography.EvelynWaughwasreceivedintotheRomanCatholicChurchin1930andhisbiographyoftheElizabethanJesuitmartyr,EdmundCampion,wasawardedtheHawthorndenPrizein1936.In1959hepublishedtheofficialLifeofRonaldKnox.FormanyyearshelivedwithhiswifeandsixchildrenintheWestCountry.Hediedin1966.
