JeromeDavidSalinger,wasborninNewYorkCityonJan.1,1919,andestablishedhisreputationonthebasisofasinglenovel,TheCatcherintheRye(1951),whoseprincipalcharacter,HoldenCaulfield,epitomizedthegrowingpainsofagenerationofhighschoolandcollegestudents.ThepublicattentionthatfollowedthesuccessofthebookledSalingertomovefromNewYorktotheremotehillsofCornish,NewHampshire.Beforethathehadpublishedonlyafewshortstories;oneofthem,"APerfectDayforBananafish,"whichappearedinTheNewYorkerin1949,introducedreaderstoSeymourGlass,acharacterwhosubsequentlyfiguredinFrannyandZooey(1961)andRaiseHightheRoofBeam,CarpenterandSeymour:AnIntroduction(1963),Salinger'sonlyotherpublishedbooks.Ofhis35publishedshortstories,thosewhichSalingerwishestopreservearecollectedinNineStories(1953).
