GrahamGreenewasbornin1904.OncomingdownfromBalliolCollege,Oxford,heworkedforfouryearsassub-editoronTheTimes.Heestablishedhisreputationwithhisfourthnovel,StamboulTrain.In1935hemadeajourneyacrossLiberia,describedinJourneyWithoutMaps,andonhisreturnwasappointedfilmcriticoftheSpectator.In1926hehadbeenreceivedintotheRomanCatholicChurchandvisitedMexicoin1938toreportonthereligiouspersecutionthere.AsaresulthewroteTheLawlessRoadsand,later,hisfamousnovelThePowerandtheGlory.BrightonRockwaspublishedin1938andin1940hebecameliteraryeditoroftheSpectator.ThenextyearheundertookworkfortheForeignOfficeandwasstationedinSierraLeonefrom1941to1943.ThislaterproducedthenovelTheHeartoftheMatter,setinWestAfrica.Aswellashismanynovels,GrahamGreenewroteseveralcollectionsofshortstories,fourtravelbooks,sixplays,threebooksofautobiography-ASortofLife,WaysofEscapeandAWorldofMyOwn(publishedposthumously)-twoofbiographyandfourbooksforchildren.Healsocontributedhundredsofessays,andfilmandbookreviews,someofwhichappearinthecollectionsReflectionsandMorningsintheDark.ManyofhisnovelsandshortstorieshavebeenfilmedandTheThirdManwaswrittenasafilmtreatment.GrahamGreenewasamemberoftheOrderofMeritandaCompanionofHonour.HediedinApril1991.(20040624)
