JamesMallahanCain(1892-1977)wasafirst-ratewriterofAmericanhard-boiledcrimefiction.BorninBaltimore,thesonofthepresidentofWashingtonCollege,Cainbeganhiscareerasareporter,servingintheAmericanExpeditionaryForceinWorldWarIandwritingforTheCrossofLorraine,thenewspaperofthe79thDivision.HereturnedfromthewartoembarkonaliteraycareerthatincludedaprofessorshipatSt.John’sCollegeinAnnapolisandastintatTheNewYorkerasmanagingeditorbeforehewenttoHollywoodasascriptwriter.Cain’sfamousfirstnovel,ThePostmanAlwaysRingsTwice,waspublishedin1934whenhewasforty-two,andbecameaninstantsensation.ItwastriedforobscenityinBostonandwassaidbyAlbertCamustohaveinspiredhisownbook,TheStranger.Theinfamousnovelwasstagedin1936,andfilmedin1946and1981.Thestoryofayounghobowhohasanaffairwithamarriedwomanandplotswithhertomurderherhusbandandcollecthisinsurance,ThePostmanAlwaysRingsTwiceisabenchmarkofclassiccrimefictionandfilmnoir.TwoofCain’sothernovels,MildredPierce(1941)andDoubleIndemnity(1943),werealsomadeintofilmnoirclassics.In1974,JamesM.CainwasawardedtheGrandMasterAwardbytheMysteryWritersofAmerica.Cainpublishedeighteenbooksinallandwasworkingonhisautobiographyatthetimeofhisdeath.,,
