MaximilianCarlEmilWeber(pronounced[maksˈveːbɐ])(21April1864–14June1920)wasaGermanpoliticaleconomistandsociologistwhowasconsideredoneofthefoundersofthemodernstudyofsociologyandpublicadministration.HebeganhiscareerattheUniversityofBerlin,andlaterworkedatFreiburgUniversity,UniversityofHeidelberg,UniversityofViennaandUniversityofMunich.HewasinfluentialincontemporaryGermanpolitics,beinganadvisortoGermany'snegotiatorsattheTreatyofVersaillesandtothecommissionchargedwithdraftingtheWeimarConstitution.Weber'smajorworksdealwithrationalizationinsociologyofreligionandgovernment.[1]HismostfamousworkishisessayTheProtestantEthicandtheSpiritofCapitalism,whichbeganhisworkinthesociologyofreligion.Inthiswork,Weberarguedthatreligionwasoneofthenon-exclusivereasonsforthedifferentwaystheculturesoftheOccidentandtheOrienthavedeveloped,andstressedimportanceofparticularcharacteristicsofasceticProtestantismwhichledtothedevelopmentofcapitalism,bureaucracyandtherational-legalstateintheWest.Inanothermajorwork,PoliticsasaVocation,Weberdefinedthestateasanentitywhichclaimsamonopolyonthelegitimateuseofphysicalforce,adefinitionthatbecamepivotaltothestudyofmodernWesternpoliticalscience.Hismostknowncontributionsareoftenreferredtoasthe'WeberThesis'.
