CormacMcCarthywasborninRhodeIslandin1933andspentmostofhischildhoodnearKnoxville,Tennessee.HeservedintheU.S.AirForceandlaterstudiedattheUniversityofTennessee.In1976hemovedtoElPaso,Texas,wherehelivestoday.McCarthy'sfictionparallelshismovementfromtheSoutheasttotheWest--thefirstfournovelsbeingsetinTennessee,thelastthreeintheSouthwestandMexico.TheOrchardKeeper(1965)wontheFaulknerAwardforafirstnovel;itwasfollowedbyOuterDark(1968),ChildofGod(1973),Suttree(1979),BloodMeridian(1985),andAllthePrettyHorses,whichwonboththeNationalBookCriticsCircleAwardandtheNationalBookAwardforfictionin1992.TheCrossingishisseventhnovelandthesecondinMcCarthy'sBorderTrilogy.
