Sartreisthedominantfigureinpost-warFrenchintellectuallife.AgraduateoftheprestigiousEcoleNormaleSuperieurewithanagregationinphilosophy,Sartrehasbeenamajorfigureontheliteraryandphilosophicalscenessincethelate1930s.Widelyknownasanatheisticproponentofexistentialism,heemphasizedthepriorityofexistenceoverpreconceivedessencesandtheimportanceofhumanfreedom.Inhisfirstandbestnovel,Nausea(1938),Sartrecontrastedthefluidityofhumanconsciousnesswiththeapparentsolidityofexternalrealityandsatirizedthehypocrisiesandpretensionsofbourgeoisidealism.Sartre'stheaterisalsohighlyideological,emphasizingtheimportanceofpersonalfreedomandthecommitmentoftheindividualtosocialandpoliticalgoals.Hisfirstplay,TheFlies(1943),wasproducedduringtheGermanoccupation,despiteitsunderlyingmessageofdefiance.Oneofhismostpopularplaysistheone-actNoExit(1944),inwhichthetraditionaltheologicalconceptofhellisredefinedinexistentialistterms.InRedGloves(LesMainsSales)(1948),SartreexaminesthepragmaticimplicationsoftheindividualinvolvedinpoliticalactionthroughthemechanismoftheCommunistpartyandachanginghistoricalsituation.Hishighlyreadableautobiography,TheWords(1964),tellsofhischildhoodinanidealisticbourgeoisProtestantfamilyandofhissubsequentrejectionofhisupbringing.Sartrehasalsomadesignificantcontributionstoliterarycriticisminhis10-volumeSituations(1947--72)andinworksonBaudelaire,Genet,andFlaubert.
