EsphyrSlobodkina(thenameispronouncedess-FEERsloh-BOD-kee-nah)wasbornintheSiberiantownofChelyabinskonSept.22,1908.EsphyrimmigratedtotheUnitedStatesonastudentvisaattheageof29.SheenrolledattheNationalAcademyofDesign,NYC,andinthe1930s,sheworkedpaintinglampshadesandsoonaftermuralsfortheWPA.EsphyrwasafoundingmemberoftheAmericanAbstractArtists,whichbeganamidcontroversyin1936.In1937Slobodkinametthechildren'sauthorMargaretWiseBrown.Inanefforttofindworkasanillustrator,SlobodkinawroteandillustratedastorywithcollagecalledMaryAndThePoodiestopresenttoBrown.ThisbegananewcareerforSlobodkina,whoillustratedmanychildren'sstoriesforMs.Brown(includingSleepyABCsandtheBigandLittleseries)whilestillcontinuingherworkasanabstractartist.Inherautobiography,(portionsavailablethroughthisweb-site)Ms.Slobodkinawrote,"WhenMargaretdied,Iwasleftwithoutawriter,andsinceshealwaysinsistedthatshelikedthewayItoldmystories,Itookadeepbreathandbegantosendthemtomyagent."Ms.Slobodkinatookherresponsibilityasachildren'sbookauthorseriously.Inhermemoirshewrote:"Theverbalpatternsandthepatternsofbehaviorwepresenttochildrenintheselightheartedconfectionsarelikelytoinfluencethemfortherestoftheirlives.Theseaestheticimpressions,justlikethemoralteachingsofearlychildhood,remainindelible."CapsforSalewasfirstpublishedin1938.Sincethenithassoldmorethantwomillioncopies.Todayitisconsideredachildren'sbookclassicasgenerationaftergenerationpassthestoryalongtonewreaders.InsalesitrankswithsuchclassicsasGoodNightMoon,accordingtoPublisher'sWeekly.CapsforSale,wonaLewisCarrollShelfAwardin1958andismemorializedinapaintingbyMs.SlobodkinaonpermanentexhibitionintheWestHartfordLibrary,CT.Ms.Slobodkinawroteandillustratednumerousotherbooks,includingMaryandThePoodies(1937),TheWonderfulFeast,(1955),TheClock(1956),TheLongIslandDucklings(1961),andPezzothePeddlerandtheCircusElephant,whichwasfirstpublishedin1967andwasreissuedin2002asCircusCapsforSale,tonameafew.Attheageof88,Esphyr'sprimaryfocusbecameoverseeingtheproductionofmusicalstorybookcassettesofalltwentyofherchildren'sbooks.Atage90,EsphyrdesignedaminimuseuminGlenHead,LongIsland,NY(throughherSlobodkinaFoundation)asaplacewhereguestscanvisitandviewmorethan200worksofart,herhandmadedollsandjewelry,aswellashercompletecollectionofchildren'sstorybooks,includingsomeoriginalillustrations.FamedartistandauthorEsphyrSlobodkinawasaleaderoftheabstractmovementintheUnitedStatesfromthe1930suntilherdeathatage93inJuly2002.Slobodkina'sworkshavereceivedhighacclaim.Herpaintings,sculpturesandliteraryworksarepartofthecollectionsofTheMetropolitanMuseum,NY;TheNationalGalleryinWashington,D.C;TheSmithsonian;TheHecksherMuseum,L.I.,NY(whereshehasapermanentwing);TheWhitneyMuseum,NY;TheWadsworthMuseum,Hartford,CT;TheNortheastChildren'sLiteratureCollection,ThomasJ.DoddResearchCenter,UniversityofConnecticut,Storrs,CT;andmore.
