DavidWiesner'sinterestinvisualstorytellingdatesbacktohighschooldayswhenhemadesilentmoviesanddrewwordlesscomicbooks.BornandraisedinBridgewater,NewJersey,hegraduatedfromtheRhodeIslandSchoolofDesignwithaBFAinIllustration.Whileastudent,hecreatedapaintingninefeetlong,whichhenowrecognizesasthegenesisofFreeFall,hisfirstbookofhisownauthorship,forwhichhewasawardedaCaldecottHonorMedalin1989.DavidwonhisfirstCaldecottMedalin1992forTuesday,andhehasgoneontowintwicemore:in2002forTheThreePigsandin2007forFlotsam.Heisonlythesecondpersonintheaward'shistorytowintheCaldecottMedalthreetimes.Davidandhiswife,KimKahng,andtheirtwochildrenlivenearPhiladelphia,wherehedevotesfulltimetoillustrationandshepursueshercareerasasurgeon.
