TayebSalihorAl-TayyibSalih(Arabic:الطيّبصالح‎)(1929–18February2009)wasaSudanesewriter.BornintheNorthernProvinceofSudan,hestudiedattheUniversityofKhartoumbeforeleavingfortheUniversityofLondoninEngland.Comingfromabackgroundofsmallfarmersandreligiousteachers,hisoriginalintentionwastoworkinagriculture.Except,however,forabriefspellasaschoolmasterbeforecomingtoEngland,hisworkinglifewasinbroadcasting.Hisworksaregenerallypolitical,dealingwiththemessuchascolonizationandgender.SalihwasalsoconsideredoneofthebestshortstorywritersworkinginArabictoday.[citationneeded]HavingstudiedbothwesternandArabliterature,philosophy,andsociety,Salihinterminglesaspectsofbothculturesinhisworks.SalihachievedimmediateacclaimwhenhisnovelSeasonofMigrationtotheNorthwasfirstpublishedinArabic,inBeirutinthelate1960s.In2001,thiswasdeclared"themostimportantArabicnovelofthe20thcentury"bytheSyrian-basedArabLiteraryAcademyinDamascus.HisworkshavebeentranslatedfromArabicintomorethan20languages.
