Pausanias,bornprobablyinLydiainAsiaMinor,wasaGreekofthe2ndcenturyCE,about120–180,whotravelledwidelynotonlyinAsiaMinor,Palestine,EgyptandNorthAfrica,butalsoinGreeceandinItaly,includingRome.HeleftadescriptionofGreeceintenbooks,whichislikeatopographicalguidebookortourofAttica,thePeloponnese,andcentralGreece,filledoutwithhistoricalaccountsandeventsanddigressionsonfactsandwondersofnature.Hischiefinterestwasthemonumentsofartandarchitecture,especiallythemostfamousofthem;theaccuracyofhisdescriptionsoftheseisprovedbysurvivingremains.
