LouisaMayAlcott(1832–88)wasbroughtupinPennsylvania,USA.Sheturnedtowritinginordertosupplementthefamilyincomeandhadmanyshortstoriespublishedinmagazinesandnewspapers.Then,in1862,duringtheheightoftheAmericanCivilWar,LouisawenttoGeorgetowntoworkasanurse,butshecontractedtyphoid.OutofherexperiencesshewroteHospitalSketches(1864)whichwonwideacclaim,followedbyanadultnovel,Moods.Shewasreluctanttowriteachildren'sbookbutthenrealizedthatinherselfandherthreesistersshehadtheperfectmodels.TheresultwasLittleWomen(1868)whichbecametheearliestAmericanchildren'snoveltobecomeaclassic--ThistextreferstothePaperbackedition.
