ErnstPawel(1920-1994),anovelistandbiographer,diedonTuesdayathishomeinGreatNeck,L.I.Hewas74.Thecausewaslungcancer,hisfamilysaid.Mr.Pawel's1984biographyofFranzKafka,"TheNightmareofReason,"wonseveralprizes,includingtheAlfredHarcourtAwardinbiographyandmemoirs,andwastranslatedinto10languages.InareviewforTheNewYorkTimes,ChristopherLehmann-Hauptcalledthework"movingandperceptive."Mr.Pawelwasalsotheauthorof"TheLabyrinthofExile,"abiographyofTheodorHerzl,thefounderofmodernZionism.HehadrecentlyfinishedabookabouttheGermanpoetHeinrichHeineandatthetimeofhisdeathwasworkingonhisownmemoirs,"LifeintheDarkAges."Bothbooksaretobepublishedposthumously,hisfamilysaid.Hewasbornin1920inBreslau,thenunderGermanrulebutnowpartofPoland,andfledNaziGermanywithhisfamilyin1933,settlingfirstinYugoslaviaandfouryearslaterimmigratingtoNewYorkCity.AfterservingasatranslatorforArmyintelligenceduringWorldWarII,hereceivedabachelor'sdegreefromtheCityUniversityofNewYork.Hewastheauthorofthreenovels,"TheIslandofTime"(1950),"TheDarkTower"(1957)and"IntheAbsenceofMagic"(1961),andnumerousessaysandbookreviews.Fluentinadozenlanguages,heworkedfor36yearsasatranslatorandpublicrelationsexecutiveforNewYorkLifeInsurance.Heretiredin1982.Heissurvivedbyhiswifeof51years,Ruth;ason,Michael,andadaughter,Miriam,bothofManhattan,andagranddaughter.
