AbouttheGuest-EditorsChristopherCMLeeandSamJacobyChristopherCMLeeandSamJacobyaretheco-directorsofthenewpostgraduateProjectiveCitiesProgrammeattheArchitecturalAssociation(AA)SchoolofArchitectureinLondon(projectivecities.aaschool.ac.uk),whichisdedicatedtoaresearch-anddesign-basedanalysisoftheemergentandcontemporarycity.TheyhavetaughttogetherattheAAsince2002andtheirinvestigationofthecity,undertakeninDiplomaUnit6from2004to2009,hasbeenpublishedinTypologicalFormations:RenewableBuildingTypesandtheCity(AAPublications,2007).Theworkhasalsobeenwidelyexhibited,includingatthe10thArchitectureBiennaleinVenice(2006)andasasoloexhibitionattheUTSGalleryinSydney(2009).ChristopherCMLeeistheco-founderandprincipalofSerieArchitects.HegraduatedwithanAADiploma(Hons),haspreviouslytaughtHistoriesandTheoriesStudiesattheAA(2009-10)andwasUnitMasterofIntermediateUnit2from2002to2004-andDiplomaUnit6from2004to2009.HeispursuinghisdoctoralresearchattheBerlageInstituteinRotterdamonthetopicofthedominanttypeandthecity.TherelationshipbetweenarchitectureandthecityisaproblemthathasinformedSamJacoby'steachingincollaborationwithChristopherLeeandhisprofessionalwork.Jacobyisalsotheco-directoroftheSpringSemesterProgrammeattheAAwherehealsopreviouslytaughtHistoryandTheoriesStudies.HewasalsoastudioleaderintheBArchprogrammeattheUniversityofNottingham.HeiscurrentlycompletingadoctoraldegreeattheTechnicalUniversityofBerlinonthetopicof‘TypeandtheSyntaxoftheCity'.Inthisissueof2onTypologicalUrbanism,LeeandJacobyrecognisethecityasacontemporaryfield,anareaofstudy,andadesignandresearchagenda,bringingtogethertheworkandresearchofcontemporaryprofessionalsandacademicsthatspeculatesonthepotentialofarchitecturalexperimentationandthemeaningfulproductionofnewideasforthecity.
