Inthisseventhandfinalvolumethelettersaredividedintotwoquitedistinctgroups.ThefirstgroupbeginswiththeremaininglettersofthemainchronologicalsequencewrittenduringtheclosingyearsofNewton'slife,andthenproceedstothosefewletterstowhichthereisnoassignabledatewithanycertainty.Thesecondgroupofletters,placedinAppendixI,containscorrectionsandadditionstothelettersprintedintheearliervolumesoftheCorrespondence.AgenealogicaltableisaddedtoAppendixIItohelpthereaderthroughtheintricaciesofNewton'sfamilytree.Evenafterthecreativepowerofhisgeniushaddesertedhim,Newtonretainedtotheveryendofhislonglifethecharacteristicclarityofhisthought.FewofNewton'slettersinthisvolumemayjustlybedescribedasscientific.TherelativeinactivityoftheMintmeantthat,althoughheapparentlydelegatedfewofhisresponsibilitiestoothers,Newton'sconcernstherewerenoonerous.Thusitisnotsurprisingthatinthelastnineyearsofhislife(theperiodcoveredinthisvolume),andparticularlyfrom1725onwards,therewasadecreaseinNewton'soutputofletters;butthosewhichhedidwriteremainaslucidasever.
