DamonRunyon(1884-1946).Ajournalistandshort-storywriter,bestrememberedforhiscolourfultalesofBroadwayandforthedistinctivestyleofhisprose,commonlytermedRunyonese.AlfredDamonRunyonwasbornin1884atManhattan,Kansas,thesonofaprinter.HegrewupinColoradoandinhisadolescencehewrotearticlesforthelocalnewspapers.AttheageoffourteenheenlistedintheSpanish-AmericanWarandservedinthePhilippines.Hereturnedhomein1900andworkedonnumerousnewspapersinColoradoSprings,DenverandSanFrancisco,beforegettingthejobofsportswriterfortheNewYorkAmericanin1911.DuringtheFirstWorldWarhebecameawarcorrespondentfortheHearstnewspapers,withwhomhecontinuedasacolumnistafterthewar.Runyon'sstoriesarehighlyoriginalandlivelyevocationsofBroadwaylow-lifeandtheNewYorksportingscene.Theyarelight-heartedvignettes,pepperedwithBroadwayslangandwith'types'ratherthanindividuals,whohaveheartsofgold,butverylittlebrainpower.InitiallycollectedinGuysandDolls(1932),hisothercollectionsofstoriesincludeBluePlateSpecial(1934)andTakeItEasy(1938).Healsowroteacomedyplay,withHowardLindsay,entitledASlightCaseofMurder(1935).DamonRunyondiedin1946.
