Hans-GeorgGadamerisconsideredtohavemadethemostimportantcontributiontohermeneuticsofthiscenturythroughhismajorwork,TruthandMethod.BorninMarburgonFebruary11,1900,heearnedhisdoctorateunderPaulNatorp,thePlatoscholar,in1922andcompletedhishabilitationthesisonPlato'sdialecticalethicsunderMartinHeideggerin1928.HespentthemajorportionofhisteachingcareerattheUniversityofHeidelberg,becomingemeritusprofessorin1968.InretirementhebecamewidelyknownintheUnitedStatesthroughhisregularfallcoursesatBostoncollegeandhisnumerouslecturesatmajoruniversitiesthroughoutthecentury.
