GabrielA.Almond(January12,1911–December25,2002)wasanAmericanpoliticalscientistbestknownforhispioneeringworkoncomparativepolitics,politicaldevelopment,andpoliticalculture.Almondbroadenedthefieldofpoliticalscienceinthe1950sbyintegratingapproachesfromothersocialsciencedisciplines,suchassociology,psychology,andanthropology,intohiswork.Hetransformedaninterestinforeignpolicyintosystematicstudiesofcomparativepoliticaldevelopmentandculture.Almond'sresearcheventuallycoveredmanytopics,includingthepoliticsofdevelopingcountries,Communism,andreligiousfundamentalism.Almondwasaprolificauthor,publishing18booksandnumerousjournalarticles,andco-writingmanyothers.HismostfamousworkwasTheCivicCulture(1963),co-authoredwithSidneyVerba.Itpopularizedtheideaofapoliticalculture-aconceptthatincludesnationalcharacterandhowpeoplechoosetogovernthemselves-asafundamentalaspectofsociety.AlmondandVerbadistinguisheddifferentpoliticalculturesaccordingtotheirlevelandtypeofpoliticalparticipationandthenatureofpeople'sattitudestowardpolitics.TheCivicCulturewasoneofthefirstlarge-scalecross-nationalsurveystudiesundertakeninpoliticalscienceandgreatlystimulatedcomparativestudiesofdemocracy.Almondalsocontributedtotheoreticalworkonpoliticaldevelopment.InComparativePolitics:ADevelopmentalApproach(1966),AlmondandG.BinghamPowellproposedavarietyofculturalandfunctionalwaystomeasurethedevelopmentofsocieties.Foraperiodinthe1960sand1970s,Almond'sapproachescametodefinecomparativepolitics.
