ThethirdeditionofComputerArchitecture:AQuantitativeApproachshouldhavebeeneasytowrite.Afterall,ourquantitativeapproachhasn'tchanged,andwesoughttocontinueourfocusonthebasicprinciplesofcomputerdesignthroughtwoeditions.Theexampleshadtobeupdated,ofcourse,justaswedidforthesecondedition.Thedramaticandongoingadvancesinthefieldaswellasthecreationofnewmarketsforcomputersandnewapproachesforthosemarkets,however,ledustorewritealmosttheentirebook.Thepaceofinnovationincomputerarchitecturecontinuedunabatedinthesixyearssincethesecondedition.Aswhenwewrotethesecondedition,wefoundthatnumerousnewconceptsneededtobeintroduced,andothermaterialdesignatedasmorebasic.AlthoughthisisofficiallythethirdeditionofComputerArchitecture:AQuantitativeApproach,itisreallyourfifthbookinaseriesthatbeganwiththefirstedition,continuedwithComputerOrganizationandDesign:TheHardware/SoftwareInterface(COD:HSI),andthenthesecondeditionofbothbooks.OvertimeideasthatwereoncefoundherehavemovedtoCOD:HSIortobackgroundtutorialsintheappendices.Thismigration,combinedwithourgoaltopresentconceptsinthecontextofthemostrecentcomputers,meanttherewasremarkablylittlefromthesecondeditionthatcouldbepreservedintact,andpracticallynothingisleftfromthefirstedition.
