JohnL.HennessyisthepresidentofStanfordUniversity,wherehehasbeenamemberofthefacultysince1977inthedepartmentsofelectricalengineeringandcomputerscience.HennessyisafellowoftheIEEEandtheACM,amemberoftheNationalAcademyofEngineering,theNationalAcademyofScience,theAmericanAcademyofArtsandSciences,andtheSpanishRoyalAcademyofEngineering.Hereceivedthe2001Eckert-MauchlyAwardforhiscontributionstoRISCtechnology,the2001SeymourCrayComputerEngineeringAward,andsharedtheJohnvonNeumannawardin2000withDavidPatterson.Aftercompletingtheprojectin1984,hetookaone-yearleavefromtheuniversitytoco-foundMIPSComputerSystems,whichdevelopedoneofthefirstcommercialRISCmicroprocessors.AfterbeingacquiredbySiliconGraphicsin1991,MIPSTechnologiesbecameanindependentcompanyin1998,focusingonmicroprocessorsfortheembeddedmarketplace.Asof2004,over300millionMIPSmicroprocessorshavebeenshippedindevicesrangingfromvideogamesandpalmtopcomputerstolaserprintersandnetworkswitches.Hennessy'smorerecentresearchatStanfordfocusesontheareaofdesigningandexploitingmultiprocessors.HehelpedleadthedesignoftheDASHmultiprocessorarchitecture,thefirstdistributedshared-memorymultiprocessorssupportingcachecoherency,andthebasisforseveralcommercialmultiprocessordesigns,includingtheSiliconGraphicsOriginmultiprocessors.SincebecomingpresidentofStanford,revisingandupdatingthistextandthemoreadvancedComputerArchitecture:AQuantitativeApproachhasbecomeaprimaryformofrecreationandrelaxation.DavidA.Pattersonwasthefirstinhisfamilytograduatefromcollege(1969A.BUCLA),andheenjoyeditsomuchthathedidn'tstopuntilaPhD,(1976UCLA).After4yearsdevelopingawafer-scalecomputeratHughesAircraft,hejoinedU.C.Berkeleyin1977.Hespent1979atDECworkingontheVAXminicomputer.HeandcolleagueslaterdevelopedtheReducedInstructionSetComputer(RISC).ByjoiningforceswithIBM's801andStanford'sMIPSprojects,RISCbecamewidespread.In1984SunMicrosystemsrecruitedhimtostarttheSPARCarchitecture.In1987,PattersonandcolleagueswonderediftriedbuildingdependablestoragesystemsfromthenewPCdisks.ThisledtothepopularRedundantArrayofInexpensiveDisks(RAID).Hespent1989workingontheCM-5supercomputer.Pattersonandcolleagueslatertriedbuildingasupercomputerusingstandarddesktopcomputersandswitches.TheresultingNetworkofWorkstations(NOW)projectledtoclustertechnologyusedbymanystartups.HeisnowworkingontheRecoveryOrientedComputing(ROC)project.Inthepast,heservedasChairofBerkeley'sCSDivision,ChairandCRA.HeiscurrentlyservingontheITadvisorycommitteetotheU.S.PresidentandhasjustbeenelectedPresidentoftheACM.Allthisresultedin150papers,5books,andthefollowinghonors,somesharedwithfriends:electiontotheNationalAcademyofEngineering;fromtheUniversityofCalifornia:OutstandingAlumnusAward(UCLAComputerScienceDepartment),McEntyreAwardforExcellenceinTeaching(BerkeleyComputerScience),DistinguishedTeachingAward(Berkeley);fromACM:fellow,SIGMODTestofTimeAward,KarlstromOutstandingEducatorAward;fromIEEE:fellow,JohnsonInformationStorageAward,UndergraduateTeachingAward,MulliganEducationMedal,andvonNeumannMedal.
